AICRP on Palms

 

ICAR-All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Palms is located at Mondouri (Kalyani),and laboratory is located at the Directorate of Research, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, West Bengal.

Profile of AICRP on Palms Mondouri Centre

The centre is located at the New Alluvial Zone, situated centrally between 21.5o- 24.5o North latitude and 86o-89o East longitude which constitutes the state’s most potential agricultural area, made up of gangetic alluvial. Total area of this zone is about 14,288 sq. km which represents 16.0 per cent of the total geographical area of the state. The average annual rainfall of this region varies between 1600 and 1800 mm. The temperature of this region is also moderate and generally ranges from 26oC to 38oC in summer and from 10oC to 20oC during winter. The topography is, in general flat. The centre deals with the crop coconut.

 Variety development.

  • Kalyani coconut-1 (Jamaica Tall) proposed by Mondouri, Kalpa Mitra ( Java), Kera Keralam ( WCT) proposed by CPCRI & mondouri centre has been recommended for release as new coconut variety both for tender nut and mature/copra purpose.
  • PO and LO recommended suitable coconut variety for West Bengal
  • Maintaining 20 number of exotic & indigenous germplasm of coconut
  • Developed 5 TXT crosses of coconut : evaluation going on
  • Establishment of seed garden for the 3 released varieties from the centre.
  • Evaluating 5 DXD crosses of coconut
  • Evaluating 10 newly released coconut varieties
  • Collection & evaluation of 10 local germplasms.
  • Standrdisation for suitable variety for tendernut purpose
  • Standrdisation for suitable age of nut harvesting for tendernut purpose
  • Flowering behavior and correlation with weather parameter of different varieties.
  • Nutritional dose for East Coast tall for New Alluvial Zone of West Bengal has been standardized as 500g. N. 250g P2 O5 and 750g K2O /palm/year.
  • Coconut based cropping system comprising of coconut + ginger + bhendi found best under West Bengal condition.
  • Coconut waste based vermi compost production.
  • Standardization of spacing and size of planting materials for ginger, turmeric ,EFYam ,colocassia etc
  • Standardisation of agronomic schedules for important medicinal plants under coconut eg ekangi, aswagandha, sarpagandha, arrowroot, kalmegh, alovera etc.
  • Standardisation of agronomic schedules for important spices under coconut eg ginger,turmeric ,chilli,coriander, blackpepper etc.
  • Development of value added product of coconut like coconut shreads etc.
  • 50% CCP+50% recommended chemical fertilizer is recommended for integrated nutrient management and sustainable productivity in the long run.
  • Coconut based cropping system preferring fruit crop, comprising of coconut, black pepper, pineapple found best followed by coconut, black pepper, banana under West Bengal condition.
  • Nutritional dose for high yielding varieties/hybrids for New Alluvial Zone of West Bengal has been standardiszed as 1000g N. 500g P2 O5 and 1000g K2O /palm/year with 50% N by organic matter substitution.
  • Evaluating Performance of commercial flowering crops under coconut gardens.
  • Evaluated Performance of commercial fruit crops under coconut gardens.
  • Evaluated Performance of commercial vegetable crops under coconut gardens.
  • Studies on fertilizer application through micro- irrigation technique for coconut.
  • Black pepper varieties for mixed crop in coconut gardens

Special

 

 

  • On 2nd september every year World coconutday is celebrated at AICRP on Palms Horticultural Research Station , Mondouri, BCKV as well as in the farmers’ field. Seedlings were distributed.
  • Training and visit of 20 no of FOTC Training of coconut farmer (approx 20 X40 = 800 farmers) ,sponsored by Coconut Development Board on coconut cultivation and management Integrated farming in Coconut and establishment of Coconut nursery and its management , Coconut Based multi-tier cropping system & its importance for increasing net return per unit area etc . Others Visit and training of 700 farmers through Govt of West Bengal Agriculture Department.
