Research is one of the major activities of any State Agricultural University (SAU) and Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) is no exception. In the changing scenario, BCKV has jurisdiction over half of the districts comprising the Old Alluvial Zone, and all the districts of the New Alluvial Zone, Red & Laterite Zone and Coastal & Saline Zone. The Viswavidyalaya has the twin responsibilities of catering to the needs of agricultural development by the Line Departments on one hand, and the needs of the individual farmers, especially the small and the marginal ones, to augment farm return, on the other. Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya presently runs 21 All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) / All India Network Projects (AINPs), may be broadly classified into three groups, namely those dealing with (i) crops such as cereals, oilseeds, fibres and forage crops, (ii) horticultural crops, and (iii) non-crop specific issues of wide agricultural interest, funded on 75:25 basis by the ICAR and the Government of West Bengal.
