The Department of Agricultural Chemicals was created in the year 2000, but the discipline of Agricultural Chemicals was very much in existence since 1970’s under the able leadership of Lt. Prof. Narayan Adityachaudhury under the then Department of Agricultural Chemistry & Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture. During this period of three decades (1970-2000) the discipline of Agricultural Chemicals flourished and grew up gradually in a new dimension of teaching, research and extension activities in the field of Plant Protection, especially in the areas of naturally occurring and synthetic pesticides.
The discipline of Agricultural Chemicals gained major impetus by launching of AICRP on Pesticide Residues in 1985 under the guidance of Prof. N. Adityachaudhury and his colleagues most renowned in their own field, viz. Prof. Ashim Chowdhury, APC Roy Chair, University of Calcutta; Prof. Asit Kumar Das, Former Vice-Chancellor, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya; Prof. Anjan Bhattacharyya, former Head of this Department.
The dream of Prof. N. Adityachaudhury and his colleagues came to reality in the year 2000 by creating a separate department. This was only possible through the dynamic initiative, untiring effort and dedication of Prof. Ashim Chowdhury, the founder Head of this Department with the valuable cooperation of other colleagues like Prof Anjan Bhattacharyya, Prof. Hemanta Banerjee and Prof. R. K. Kole.
The vision of the Department is to achieve the integrated objectives of Agricultural education and research of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in West Bengal.
The domain of the departmental activity encompasses ‘Chemistry’ and ‘Plant Protection’ which covers the following areas:
Pesticide Chemistry & Technology; Pesticide Formulation & Quality Control; Pesticide Residues & Degradation; Environmental Safety Assessment of Pesticides; Safe Use of Pesticides; Natural Product Chemistry; Development of Bio-Pesticides; Food & Environmental Chemistry; Toxicology.
The mission of the department is to generate trained personnel in the discipline of Agricultural Chemicals and to pursue research and extension activities in the relevant discipline for overall development of Agriculture.
