Seed Science and Technology department was started from February 06, 1999 under the Faculty of Agriculture, Mohanpur, West Bengal with seven teaching and only six non-teaching personnel. Since inception, students of M.Sc.(Ag.) and Ph.D. are continuing their research programme on various aspects of Seed Science & Technology, especially quality seed production, seed invigoration, seed priming, pelleting, encapsulation, developmental pattern, etc. Nature of physiological and biochemical changes during formation and development of diverse crop seeds are also being studied. Degradation of biochemical constituents is being clarified with the advancement of storage period of those seeds. Low cost protocol for large scale multiplication of parental lines, development of new varieties and production of nucleus and breeder seed is included in regular activities of the department.
Objectives
To strengthen undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and research, simultaneous development programme related to Seed Production Technology.
To impart training for entrepreneurship development in commercial seed production.
To initiate basic research related to enhancement/maintenance of genetic purity, seed storage and quality assessment.
Assessment of pattern of physiological and bio-chemical activity during post-fertilization seed development and germination.
Maintenance/improvement in seed health, seed processing of different field and horticultural crops.
Characterization of released and / or improved varieties/hybrids using morphological, biochemical and molecular markers for varietal identity and registration.
