The University imparts both institutional as well as off-campus training through its network of various training units attached to the KVKs, Regional Research Stations and ISOPOM cell. In order to further strengthen its on-campus training curricula, a Farmers’ Training Centre (FTC) was set up in 1989 under operational control of the Directorate of Extension Education. For the very purpose of scaling up the institutional training programmes, subsequently in 1995, the said Farmers’ Training Centre was shifted to its present premises, which has gradually been transformed as a self-contained training complex to perform as operational hub for planning and management of institutional training programmes of the University.
It is now well equipped to run four training courses at a time with comprehensive provision for interactive lectures through ICT appliances. It can house 130 inmates of which there has been a provision of 20 A.C. beds to conduct orientation and refresher courses for the Agri-Executives, Bank Officials and Corporate Managers on emerging areas of expert agriculture; 48 beds for the Govt. and other Institutional Officers attached to Technology Transfer vis-à-vis rural development and rest 46 are dormitory seats for farmers, SHG members etc.
The FACC has a separate state of the art computer lab for pertaining training on computer literacy as well as ICT related vocational courses. Due to excellent facilities, this training centre has by now become to be an extremely busy venue for conducting various short and long duration courses with receipt of fund support from various government, non-government, private sector organizations as well as NGOs, engaged in the task of agricultural vis-à-vis rural development.
Further, the Farmers’ Training Centre has been identified by the National Institute of Management of Agricultural Extension (MANAGE) as one of the 58 Resource Centres in the country under Agri-clinics and Agri-business Management Scheme being jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, Small Farmers’ Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) and NABARD. Under the aegis of said scheme, a fully equipped Video Interactive Communication System has been installed in a dedicated 30-seated Video Conference Hall to train up the prospective graduate agripreneurs.
The core functions of the training unit are as follows:
- Identification of needed areas of training
- Modulation of training programmes in terms of content, methodology and duration
- Selection of suitable Centres, Departments and course Directors for conducting various training programmes
- Co-ordinate between sponsoring agency and the university
- Processing, development and documentation of appropriate technical materials for training
- Monitoring of the effectiveness of the training programmes and redesigning of those as per feed-back
