About the Department

The Department of Farm Machinery and Power was established in 1996 as one of the constituent departments of The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering under Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur. The Department was formed to pursue excellence in teaching, research and development, industrial collaboration and farmer’s hands-on training. Besides catering course works to undergraduate B.Tech. program, this department offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. degree programmes in the field of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering.

The Department mainly offers courses to the Under graduate (UG) degree programmes in Agricultural Engineering that are associated with engineering mechanics, engineering drawing, workshop technology, theory of machine, machine design, farm machines and power systems including renewable energy sources. It also offers basic courses for UG programmes to the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Horticulture.

This department is engaged in carrying out active research programmes in design and development of appropriate farm machines for small and marginal farms of west Bengal. Research works are focussed on machine design, tillage & traction, numerical modelling, energy optimization for conservation agriculture etc. Presently, special research interest is given on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in precision agricultural operations.

Vision & Mission

TThe discipline of Agricultural Engineering started with the concept of farm machinery and power systems’ application to the field of agriculture for improving the efficiency of different inputs and reducing drudgery and maintaining timeliness. Besides offering core courses related to farm power sources and farm implements to B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes, the department is also engaged with research and extension activities for effective implementation of much needed farm mechanization in West Bengal.

Specific mandates of the department can be envisaged as follows :-

1. Pursue excellence in teaching and research for the UG, PG and Ph.D. programmes

2. Providing extension services to farmers and trainees of different levels from external organizations and industry

3. Identification of mechanization gaps for future research

4. Develop and adopt farm implements and machines suitable for local farms

5. Conducting prototype manufacturing and feasibility testing

6. Training the stakeholders on operation and maintenance of farm machines and power systems

7. Collaborating research activities with other state and ICAR institutes

8. Assist local manufacturers in providing technical knowhow.
