Success Story : Pure Mustard Oil

Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalya produces very good quality mustard oil marketed with the brand name ‘Pure Mustard Oil’ under the project entitled,”.

This is a revolving fund project of Rs.4.26 lakhs only funded by ICAR in the year 1999-2000. The project started functioning from 2001. Over the years the entire amount of ICAR fund has been refunded and a capital amount of nearly 4.0lakhs have been generated.

There are 3 regular workers engaged in daily wage basis. Other than these 3 workers there are a good number of persons use to earn by selling the mustard oil & cakes of the project. This is a unique example of practice of fund generation as well as creation of employment opportunity.

The ‘West Bengal Live Stock Development Corporation Ltd’, Govt. of West Bengal is a bulk purchaser of the oil. This department use to sell it through their outlets at Kolkata including the outlet at Writers’ Building. All those who have used this oil are convinced about the purity & quality of this oil. It is such popular that in recent time this oil was kept for sale in the ‘university stall’ in a book fair held at Kalyani Town from where only in 3 days in the evening time the counter sell amount was Rs.52,000/-. Due to shortage of stock we were unable to meet the instant demand otherwise the amount would have been much higher.

The farmers and students very often use to visit the oil plant. The machinery, operation, economics, every things are open to them for their experience & learning. Having exposure to this unit many farmers/unemployed youths have expressed their willingness to venture such type of project for their livelihood or enhancing the income.

This project has earned some fame for the university and developed as a unit useful for demonstration. Having known the good name of our produce (mustard oil) Govt. of West Bengal, Department of Agricultural Marketing has proposed additional fund so that the production capacity to be increased to 4-5 times from present capacity of 120liters/day and the entire produce they will purchase to sell it through the ‘Sufal Bangla” marketing network under their control.
