- Since 2013, department has released two rice varieties (GB1, IET17430 and GB3, IET22752) and two Jute varieties (). Around 25000 tones of breeder seed and 150000 tones certified seed is produced per year for two rice varieties, GB1 and GB3.
- Several alumni are also successful as an educationist and researcher at the national institute of repute like, IISc, JNU, JNCAS&R, Bose Institute, IIT-Mumbai, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kharagpur, NIT, IISER, NISER, BARC etc.The research programs aim to increase agricultural productivity by developing improved plant varieties and advanced plant genomics. Faculty members able to earn sponsorship for their research activities in the field of agriculture not only from ICAR or state but also from the DBT, DST, BARC, ICARDA, and several national and multinational private companies.
Future Plan of the Department
- Excel towards leadership in education and research of the country in the area of crop improvement.
- More thrust on hands-on experience with the inheritance and selection of complex traits in actual plant populations, basic biology of plants, principles of advance quantitative genetics, principles and practice of plant breeding and related sciences such as genomics, applied statistics, experimental design, and pest sciences. Intensive breeding in pulse and oil seed crops as it is done in cereals and other crops like rice, wheat, tomato etc.
- Development of climate resilience varieties of cereals, pulse, oilseeds, vegetables etc and development of related human resources to combat the climate-change related issues.
